Tuesday Psalm 62

Prayer: Guide me, O God, through the truths in your Word, in Christ. Amen.

God alone

For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.

What does this mean? Our devotion writer retells a story about a person who faces a flood, or perhaps a hurricane. He calls upon God to rescue him. Three rescuers come to save him, but he turns them down because God is his savior. This person eventually is killed by the storm and when he comes to heaven, he asks why God didn’t save him. God answers, “I sent you three rescuers. What more did you want?”

Today’s point was that when you put your trust in God, do you wait for God to help you in the way that you imagine, or do you appreciate and trust that God uses others to give you help? Have you decided that God will help you only in ways that you will accept? Knowing what we have learned about God’s ways through the Scriptures, do we not know that God can help us in many different ways? To second guess God is not really faith at all. Our devotion writer proclaims; “God’s plan may be to use ordinary people, science, technology, nature, and so on to intervene. My confirmation pastor said a miracle isn’t necessarily something fully supernatural; it can be God using typical means, but exactly when they’re needed.!”

We know this, yes? So why do people die in natural disasters by refusing to evacuate when warned by local authorities? Some say that God will protect them. Interesting how appropriate this message is as hurricane Ian approaches western Florida.

Prayer: “Awesome God, forgive me for boxing you into my plan. Grow my faith to trust in you alone. Amen.”

Psalm 62

New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised

Psalm 62

Song of Trust in God Alone

To the leader: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall never be shaken.

How long will you assail a person,
    will you batter your victim, all of you,
    as you would a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence.
    They take pleasure in falsehood;
they bless with their mouths,
    but inwardly they curse.Selah

For God alone my soul waits in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my deliverance and my honour;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us.Selah

Those of low estate are but a breath,
    those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
    they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no confidence in extortion,
    and set no vain hopes on robbery;
    if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

11 Once God has spoken;
    twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12     and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.
For you repay to all
    according to their work.
