Friday Psalm 29

Prayer: O God, help us hear your voice over the other voices we hear, in Christ. Amen.

Voices—and one supreme voice

(Adapted from Christ in Our Home – daily devotions)

The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

What voices do you listen to? Announcements while in a store maybe calling for an extra cashier? Maybe your Echo Dot? How about your smart doorbell camera? Maybe even the voice on your GPS when you make a wrong turn? Did they just announce that your plane was boarding?

What voices do you turn off, ignore? Today’s psalm declares that God’s voice is so powerful that it can sound like thunder or break the cedars of Lebanon, and more. We often ignore voices of authority because we are distracted by life’s distractions. Even so there are many voices that are important for us to understand because the information might save our lives. We all have learned to pay attention in many cases because of experiences where we didn’t listen caused us some kind of pain or embarrassment. What is worse is when we ignore God’s voice too.

God’s voice comes to us through the Bible and through our pastors and leaders. It often gets our attention, or we miss out on some information or guidance that might give us strength, forgiveness, and blessings of peace in our lives.

11 May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Prayer: “God, when I choose not to listen, make me aware and draw me back to your voice. Amen.”

Psalm 29

The Voice of God in a Great Storm

A Psalm of David.

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
    worship the Lord in holy splendor.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf
    and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl
    and strips the forest bare,
    and in his temple all say, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
    May the Lord bless his people with peace!
