Words to live by

¹⁸ “You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and fix them as an emblem on your forehead.

Occasionally we hear words that are so profound that we want to remember them that we might call them “Words to live by!” Words that might come to mind as examples could be, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” Or maybe “Grace happens!” Or maybe “Stuff happens!” Today we read the words, “You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul…” Or in other verses, “you shall love the Lord your God!” Throughout the Bible we read many other verses that make plain sense words to live by.

There are many situations where we might remember God’s words to us through baptism, Holy Communion, and in Worship. We are called to share these words with our children, and to write them metaphorically on our front doors and in our actions when we show that God’s justice, mercy, and love.

These are words to live by that proclaim God frees us and all people from bondage to sin. He leads us through life’s wilderness with an abundance of gifts and we use them to share love by serving others.

Prayer: “Gracious and powerful Presence, may we live by your words of life, through Jesus Christ. Amen.”

¹⁸ “You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and fix them as an emblem on your forehead. ¹⁹ Teach them to your children, talking about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise up. ²⁰ Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, ²¹ so that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your ancestors to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.
