Friday Psalm 112

Prayer: O God, thank you for your Word and help me to delight in your commandments. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Eyes on the prize

Praise the Lord! Happy are those who fear the Lord, who greatly delight in his commandments.

When you read today’s text, do you tend to think you are “a woeful and unrighteous person?”  I don’t feel that way. I do feel afraid of evil things.  I sometimes feel that I could stand up more for injustice and that I don’t always have the courage that I would like.  I do see that some people who appear wicked do prosper because of the way they disregard others.  Our DW then asks, “what is this psalm about?”

Most of the Psalms we read offer encouragement.  They point to the power and help that God can give.  They teach that God triumphs over all evil and that He is gracious and powerful and helps us who appeal to Him. And that He gives faith and helps us remain calm in the face of the trials and tribulations of life.

Our DW explains; “Jesus was righteous and ended up on the cross. God raised him up, and the wicked were shamed and proven wrong. Jesus Christ proclaims in his death and resurrection that God’s reign is at hand. Let’s keep our eyes on the prize.”

Prayer: “Lord, strengthen me to worship and obey you until your gentle reign comes in glory, in Christ’s name. Amen.”

Psalm 112 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Psalm 112

Blessings of the Righteous

Praise the Lord!
    Happy are those who fear the Lord,
    who greatly delight in his commandments.
Their descendants will be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,
    and their righteousness endures forever.
They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright;
    they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.
It is well with those who deal generously and lend,
    who conduct their affairs with justice.
For the righteous will never be moved;
    they will be remembered forever.
They are not afraid of evil tidings;
    their hearts are firm, secure in the Lord.
Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid;
    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever;
    their horn is exalted in honor.
10 The wicked see it and are angry;
    they gnash their teeth and melt away;
    the desire of the wicked comes to nothing.
