Psalm 89:1-4, 15-18

Prayer: Praise to you, O God, for the many gifts you have given and for being with me even when I didn’t know you were there. Your Word teaches me these truths, in Christ. Amen.

Who is the future.

I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.

Our devotion writer tells of how meaningful her travel to the Holy Land has been.  The Scriptures now take on new meaning. “The awe I felt previously when reading the scriptures took on new depth as I came to realize how people of faith handed down their faith through many generations. I believe today because of the messages of God’s faithfulness they proclaimed thousands of years ago.”

It is true, we often gain a new perspective when we see places where historical events occurred.  Gettysburg, St. Augustine, Rome, Jerusalem. When we see the places and the signs new meaning cannot be avoided.  Now with our new perspective, we can share with others with new feeling and a new voice.  And so we pass along our stories of faith with new passion and share with younger generations.

Our devotion writer asks; “How do we carry our faith and our gospel’s message into the future? In our service of Holy Baptism, members of the congregation promise to take responsibility for raising the one who is baptized in the faith—through educational and other church programs, of course, but also as we share our own personal faith stories with the newly baptized. Have you shared your faith story with someone lately?”

Prayer: “O God, make us bold to proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. In Christ’s name. Amen.”

Psalm 89:1-18

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Psalm 89

God’s Covenant with David

A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever;     with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. I declare that your steadfast love is established forever;     your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.

You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,     I have sworn to my servant David: ‘I will establish your descendants forever,     and build your throne for all generations.’”Selah

Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord,     your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?     Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord, a God feared in the council of the holy ones,     great and awesome above all that are around him? O Lord God of hosts,     who is as mighty as you, O Lord?     Your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule the raging of the sea;     when its waves rise, you still them. 10 You crushed Rahab like a carcass;     you scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. 11 The heavens are yours, the earth also is yours;     the world and all that is in it—you have founded them. 12 The north and the south—you created them;     Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name. 13 You have a mighty arm;     strong is your hand, high your right hand. 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;     steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. 15 Happy are the people who know the festal shout,     who walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance; 16 they exult in your name all day long,     and extol your righteousness. 17 For you are the glory of their strength;     by your favor our horn is exalted. 18 For our shield belongs to the Lord,     our king to the Holy One of Israel.
