Prayer: Open my heart, O God, to the wisdom in your Word, in Christ. Amen.
Whom to believe?
9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.
How do you know the difference between a false prophet and a prophet of God? What’s the catch? What’s the punch line? The prophecies of a real prophet of God is that his prophecies come true!
I’ve always wondered, when listening to modern day prophets, how will I know which is true. If I make decisions about my life based upon a false prophet’s words, I could find myself in terrible trouble. If I wait to see if it comes true, I might be too late. So how do you tell the difference?
Our devotion writer explains; “The prophet Jeremiah struggled to help people to understand the difference between true and false prophets. The false prophets were not sent by God, and their words did not come true. On the other hand, the true prophets like Jeremiah were sent by God. Their words came true. In Jesus, the Word became flesh and lived among us. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are given God’s Word that we will share in God’s promises. Through the reading of scripture, and through baptism and the Lord’s Supper, we experience that true Word daily. It is a word we can trust and believe.”
So, therefore, a true prophets words must be consistent with God’s Word.
Prayer: “Thank you, God, for sending Jesus, you Word made flesh. Help us to always believe in him. Amen.”
New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
5 Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; 6 and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. 7 But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8 The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. 9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”
