Thursday Exodus 19:2-8a

Prayer: Mighty and gracious God, lead your people through your Word, in Christ. Amen.

God will bear you up

You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.

Just when you begin thinking that you are holding your own without God’s help, you learn that God has always been there holding you up—putting directions in front of you—giving you opportunities.  He has more of a hand in your life travels than you think.  Look at what God did for the Israelites.  Our devotion writer points out; “The people are like eaglets. The Lord has freed them so they may learn to fly—to serve and live in the blessing and purposes of God.  Leaving the nest is difficult, but the Almighty like a mother eagle, is at the ready, swooping down under them and bearing them up so they may live to fly again.”

Just as God did for Israel, He does for us. We are saved in baptism through Jesus Christ.  The covenant God made with Abraham, has passed on to each of us. “You are my beloved child, forgiven and freed in the waters of Baptism.” Of course, you will not live a perfect life.  After all we are human, but God loves us in spite of our imperfections. Our devotions writer declares; “God will bear you up and continue to teach you and challenge you fly, live, and serve. And when you flounder again, the Lord will be there to raise you up again.”

Prayer: “Bear us up, God, so we may live in your blessing and serve your purposes. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Exodus 19:2-8

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

They had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.”

So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. The people all answered as one: “Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.” Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.
