Prayer: Creator God, your Word is about our life in your care, teach us today in Christ. Amen.
The second “first family”
16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing that is with you…
The great flood wash away all the first failed attempt at life on earth. Noah and his family, and the animals in the ark, were called to repopulate the earth. It was a new beginning. Imagine how it may have looked when dry land finally appeared and new trees and plants appeared. There was hope and promise of new and abundant life.
Our devotion writer reminds us that even today we see floods and storms. Lives are threatened and sometime tragically lost. “We may feel that it’s all we can do to stay afloat amid such turbulence.” Sometimes the only peace of safety we can have is with our home and family. And we have the promise from God that each day is a new beginning. Every time we ask for forgiveness, the slate is wiped clean like the earth after the flood. We can have a new life, a different life. As our devotion writer puts it; “We will walk on the dry land of peace under the blue skies of promise.”
Prayer: “Be my hope and promise, O God, through every chance and challenge of life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
13 In the six hundred first year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and saw that the face of the ground was drying. 14 In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15 Then God said to Noah, 16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—so that they may abound on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So Noah went out with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives. 19 And every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out of the ark by families.
