Wednesday Daniel 10:10-14, 12:1-3

Opening prayer: Holy Spirit, fill me with wisdom and the ministries that you want me to pursue. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Michael and All Angels

1 "At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise.

The Angel Gabriel was the one who appeared to Mary to announce that God had selected her to be mother to the Lord.  Angels are mentioned many times in scripture and often in the context of protecting God’s people.  Many believe they have met angels today, or have an angel as a personal protector.

Our writer says; “Angels serve many purposes in Scripture.  They are messengers from God, like Gabriel with Mary. They praise God, as with the shepherds at Jesus’ birth. And they are sent to protect…”

Today’s text is a vision by Daniel of a messenger Angel who was sent to him to provide an announcement concerning prophecy of things to come, and a warning to pass on to God’s people.

3 Those who are wise [a] will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.

So have you met an Angel?  Do you know an Angel?

Prayer: “Almighty God, thank you for the protection of your angels. Grant that we might minister as they do, through Christ. Amen.”

Daniel 10:10-14

10 A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11 He said, "Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you." And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.

12 Then he continued, "Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13 But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come."

Daniel 12:1-3

The End Times

1 "At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise [a] will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.

  1. Judith says:

There seems to be a Protestant aversion to angels. I thank God that He blessed me with a grandmother – Lutheran, no less! — who taught me all about angels from scripture, from guardians to messengers to teachers. There have been many "angel experiences" in my life and in the lives of many people I’ve known.

  2. Judith says:

I wonder about Daniel. He was prone to trances and seizures, and it must have been a puzzle to those around him. I wonder, how would I react to being visited by an angel from time to time, being given messages straight from God, being told to keep something secret until the End time? Daniel must have been a truly amazing man to be around, to know. If we met him today, would we invite him in for supper? Or would we call 911, to have him committed?
